Optical Test
An Amsler Grid is a simple, square grid of horizontal and vertical lines used to detect vision problems resulting from damage to the macula or retina—especially conditions like:
-
Macular degeneration
-
Diabetic retinopathy
-
Macular edema
What It Looks Like
It’s usually a grid of straight lines with a dot in the center (used as a fixation point). The whole thing is printed in black and white, often on paper or shown on a screen.

How it's Used
-
You cover one eye.
-
Stare at the central dot.
-
Without moving your gaze, notice the rest of the grid.
What to Watch For
-
Wavy, blurred, or missing lines can indicate problems.
-
Dark or blank spots may also show abnormalities.
Why It's Important
It’s a quick at-home test or clinical tool to catch early signs of macular degeneration or other central vision issues before they become severe.
